The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has begun an investigation into an incident involving the cargo vessel Baltic Klipper after 16 refrigerated shipping containers were lost overboard in the Solent.

It happened in the 6 December, when the Liberia-registered vessel was off the Isle of Wight ahead of entering Portsmouth. Rough seas with significant swell and strong south-westerly winds caused the accident.

Containers washed ashore

Following the incident, 13 of the containers were found washed ashore along the south coast, including at Selsey, Bognor Regis, and Pagham Harbour. Foodstuffs and plastic insulation spilled onto beaches, prompting clean-up efforts.

Three shipping containers remain unaccounted for, and the Solent deep-water channel was temporarily closed to shipping due to the risk of collisions with semi-submerged containers.

Focus of the investigation

Initial findings suggest that some containers were not properly secured for the vessel’s arrival in port. The Baltic Klipper rolled heavily while manoeuvring to pick up a port pilot, causing the cargo loss.

The MAIB’s safety investigation aims to understand the events and practices that led to the accident, including the practice of removing cargo securing arrangements while vessels are underway before entering a port.

The investigation will also consider the environmental impact caused by the spilled cargo and make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
