People are being asked to have their say on Portsmouth’s roads, travel and transport, from road and pavement conditions to cycling facilities, as part of a national public satisfaction survey.

Portsmouth City Council is one of more than 100 local authorities taking part in the National Highways and Transport Public Satisfaction Survey, enabling resident feedback in Portsmouth to be compared with views from across England and parts of Scotland.

The survey, which is being run for the 19th year, is the largest collaboration between local authorities offering the opportunity to compare results, share in best practice and identify further opportunities to work together in the future.

The questionnaire has been sent to a minimum random sample of 4,500. Local and national results to be published in late October 2026.

Residents who receive the questionnaire can complete it online using the link on the front and a unique code. Up to two people per household can respond.

The results will help the council understand what residents think, how services are performing, and which areas should be prioritised for improvement. The 2025 survey identified that Portsmouth was second out of 111 local authorities overall, had 115 out of 149 measures scored as 'getting better', and had 141 out of 149 measures scored as 'above average'.

Portsmouth's residents were also found to be most satisfied with local bus services and felt that the city's cycle lanes and routes are improving. In addition, they survey highlighted that safe roads were the most important theme to them, and that they'd like to see additional improvement with traffic congestion.

Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

"This national survey will once again prove invaluable in helping Portsmouth City Council understand what our residents think and what may need further development. Whether they use services or not, their views matter. I urge people to take up this opportunity to share their experiences, and help us deliver the best outcomes for our city."

"The Council uses the learnings and information from the NHT survey and the input of other sources, including resident feedback, to finetune the delivery of its services, and support a culture of proactive improvement."
