Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has established a new roads policing Tasking Team to tackle dangerous driver behaviours and prioritise the Fatal Five offences that result in the most road-related deaths and severe injuries.

The Fatal Five offenses include speeding, impairment due to drink or drugs, distraction such as mobile phone use, not wearing seatbelts, and now ‘careless or inconsiderate driving.’

This addition aligns the force with other UK police forces aiming to reduce road fatalities.

The Tasking Team will actively monitor serious accident hotspots in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, contributing to wider efforts by deploying to areas where the criminal use of vehicles is suspected.

Police Sergeant Stephen Phillips, the leader of the team, stated, “Too many lives have been shattered by dangerous and careless drivers.”

He warned that those engaging in risky behaviours such as speeding and distracted driving could expect proactive interventions to remove them from the road.

Phillips highlighted the strategic approach of the team, consisting of targeting high-risk locations in unmarked cars to apprehend offenders without hesitation.

PCC Donna Jones emphasized that careless driving frequently contributes to fatal incidents, especially among younger and older drivers.

She expressed commitment to enhancing road safety through increased road policing investment, ensuring proactive measures against hazardous driving.

This new initiative aims to bolster safer driving practices across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight by holding individuals accountable for reckless choices on the road.
