Hampshire Fire urge people to register their appliances
It is ‘Register my Appliance Week’ this week
Hampshire fire bosses are urging people across the south coast to register their appliances, following several call outs this year to overheated washing machines and tumble dryers.
Registering electrical products means the manufacturer can contact you if your product turns out to have a fault, be dangerous or needs recalling.
Nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of UK homeowners confessed they might not immediately hear about a recall on an appliance they own, whilst one in five couldn’t remember if they had registered their large appliances and less than half (46 per cent) had registered all their major white goods.
Electrical products such as chargers, hair dryers, straighteners, kettles, irons and toasters are recalled more regularly than you might think but many remain unregistered so continue to be used, putting their owners at risk of electrical shocks, fires or even death.
Each new electrical appliance you buy for your home should be registered but if you haven’t registered your older products, it’s not too late.
This Register my Appliance Week (19-23 Jan), there is no better time to check you’ve registered all your electrical items, especially new gadgets and appliances you’ve brought into your home over the festive period.
Assistant Director of Community Safety, James Lucy said:
“It’s incredibly important that the white goods we all rely on every day in our homes, are registered.
“It’s quick, free, and means that you will be the first to know if there is a fault with your appliance.
“By spending just a few minutes registering the products in your home, you will have the peace of mind that your appliance is safe to use, allowing you to enjoy its perks and possibly extend its lifespan.”
How do I register my appliances?
There should be paperwork with the product explaining how to register the product and instructions on how to operate and maintain it.
If you’ve had the item for a while and have lost the paperwork it’s still possible to register it. In order to register your product, you’ll need the brand name, model, serial number and the date of purchase (or as near to it as you can remember).
AMDEA’s Register My Appliance portal provides a quick and easy solution offering online access to more than 70 leading brands, with most accepting registration of both new and older appliances.
Alternatively, Electrical Safety First provides information of electrical products that have been recalled since 2007. Check electrical product recalls to make sure that your home is safe.
