Full size Spitfire will take centre stage at Southampton Street Party
A special event is being held in Carlton Place today (11 May) to mark the 80th Anniversary of VE Day
GO! Southampton will be supporting celebrations in the city centre to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, in partnership with the traders of Bedford Place and Carlton Place, as well as Southampton City Council.
A special street party is being held today (11 May).
Carlton Place will be filled with music and fancy dress from the era.
There'll be a full size Spitfire on display in Carlton Place, with the legendary aircraft designed and built in the city.
Executive Director at GO! Southampton Stephen Manion who are supporting the celebrations told us why this event is important.
He said: "We mustn't let this be forgotten, people lost lives and our country went through a dark period.
"The Spitfire being in the centre of Carlton Place will be something that people will gather around. It's a name that brings everyone's pride to the fore, whether you are local or not."
Event organiser Mark Sanger said: "Southampton was really affected by the Second World War, with thousands of homes destroyed and lives lost. The city and this region had a really significant part in defeating the fascist army."
On the day visitors can enjoy:
A full-size Spitfire
Military and vintage vehicles
