Octagon theatre launches youth performance company to empower Somerset's young actors
New opportunity for 13-18 year olds to perform at theatres in Yeovil and Exeter
Young performers in Somerset are being offered a unique opportunity to take part in a groundbreaking performance company thanks to the Octagon Theatre and Westlands Entertainment Venue.
This January, the Octagon Connections Company welcomes 13-18 year olds to participate in a program that will culminate in productions at both Westlands Entertainment Venue in Yeovil and Exeter Northcott Theatre.
Partnering with the National Theatre as part of its Connections 2027 programme, the initiative is set to inspire the younger generation with professional guidance and a platform to showcase their talents.
Katherine Beverley, Arts Engagement & Outreach Manager, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Launching our first-ever Octagon Connections Company is a hugely exciting milestone for us.
"Through our partnership with the National Theatre, young people in and around Yeovil will have the chance to be part of something truly special, working alongside professional theatre-makers and performing as part of a nationally celebrated youth theatre programme.”
Participants will engage in 40 hours of contact time with the creative team, honing their acting skills through technique, character development, and ensemble work as they create and perform their version of “Wildfire”, a bold play by Oliver Emanuel and Victoria Beesley.
The free audition session will be held on 30th January 2027, 2pm - 4pm, at Westlands Entertainment Venue, with strong interest expected. Prospective participants are encouraged to book early, as places are limited. The total cost for the programme is £160 per person, breaking down to £4 per hour, making it accessible to young actors seeking to develop their craft.
Rehearsals will be held twice a week from February to April, preparing for the home performance on 3rd April and the Exeter Northcott performance on 25th April 2027. Additional rehearsals may be required as the performances approach.
Whether young performers are considering drama school, professional training, or simply wish to deepen their abilities, this opportunity offers a chance to be part of a dynamic experience. The Octagon Connections Company is committed to welcoming participants from all backgrounds and experience levels, fostering creativity and encouraging lasting friendships among young actors.
