Yeovil MP challenges Trump on remarks about dyslexia

Adam Dance criticises Trump's comments and continues advocating for neurodiversity

Yeovil MP Adam Dance has publicly denounced US President Donald Trump's recent comments about dyslexia, asserting that they are not only offensive but also misrepresent the capabilities of individuals with learning disabilities.

Trump's remarks, directed at California Governor Gavin Newsom, suggested that those with dyslexia should not hold leadership positions.

Dance, who himself is dyslexic, found the comments deeply troubling and emphasised that dyslexia does not impede leadership abilities.

"Dyslexia is a common learning difference that affects many bright, capable individuals," Dance said.

"It does not limit someone’s ability to lead or serve the public."

He stressed the unique strengths that neurodivergent individuals bring to leadership roles, including resilience and creativity.

Dance, a longstanding advocate for neurodiversity in Parliament, actively participates in initiatives to improve awareness, diagnosis, and support for dyslexic and neurodivergent individuals.

He is involved with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Dyslexia and serves as Vice Chair of the APPG on ADHD.

His efforts include introducing a Bill for universal screening of neurodivergent traits in primary schools and advocating for improved teacher training and support for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

"I'm proud to serve in Parliament and use my experiences to push for greater understanding," Dance added.

"We must challenge discriminatory rhetoric wherever it appears."
