Yeovil Hospital spinal service supports over 300 patients in first year
New clinic offers local spinal care for the first time in a generation
Over 300 patients have benefited from Yeovil Hospital's new spinal service in its inaugural year, according to hospital staff.
May 2025 marked a significant milestone when Yeovil Hospital, operated by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, launched its spinal outpatient clinic, bringing local spinal care accessibility back after a generation-long gap.
The service is led by consultant surgeon Mr Alex Goubran, with clinics held every Wednesday in the hospital’s general outpatients department.
In addition to conducting the clinic, Mr Goubran participates in various clinical activities each week, including trauma and orthopaedic meetings and ward rounds for patients with spinal conditions.
Since its inception, the team has conducted nearly 40 clinics and reached even more people through ward rounds and outpatient care.
Mr Goubran noted the impact of expanding the spinal service across Somerset's acute hospitals.
"Our spinal service is proving really popular with our patients from Yeovil and the surrounding area," he said.
Patients have expressed surprise and relief at accessing spinal treatment closer to home, which has enhanced their healthcare experience.
The clinic aims to ensure most patients from Yeovil have appointments at their local hospital, improving access to care.
Furthermore, there are ambitions to enhance the services offered at Yeovil Hospital, including the potential for spinal surgery in the future.
"While all spinal operations in Somerset currently take place at Musgrove Park Hospital, we’d ideally love to expand the service at Yeovil in the future – potentially in an operating suite or theatre, as well as facilities for spinal injections," Mr Goubran added.
He also expressed gratitude towards Yeovil Hospital’s supportive colleagues, especially consultant Mr Matt Hall, department manager Helen Murray, and senior manager Cara O’Keefe.
