The University of Bath has launched an investigation into claims that members of a sports club planned to spike female students during Freshers' Week.

The university's rugby club says it's never organised, promoted, or attempted to arrange any activity of this nature, whilst the uni now says it's looking to establish the facts - and that if any evidence of wrongdoing is found, it will ensure that student disciplinary measures are "implemented robustly".

It's also now reviewing the culture around its sports clubs - and security around nightclubs and other venues in the city has also been stepped up.

Concerns emerged in 2025

These concerns previously emerged at the start of Semester 1 in 2025, and resurfaced recently amongst the student body.

In response, the Rugby Club emphasised their commitment to a culture of respect, accountability, and inclusion, denying any involvement in organising or promoting such activities.

The Club is now collaborating with the Students' Union and other university partners to maintain its values and ensure its members uphold their responsibilities as representatives.

Whilst both the Students' Union and the Rugby Club are endorsing the #NeverOK initiative, aimed at combatting harassment, bullying, sexual misconduct, and discrimination at all levels.

Students who witness or experience inappropriate behavior are encouraged to report the incidents to their institutions, the Students' Union, venue staff, or relevant authorities for action.

The emphasis remains on student safety, with ongoing efforts to address these concerns responsibly and visibly.

Police statement

Avon and Somerset Police have said they are aware of the rumours circulating online "about some individuals' intentions to spike drinks during Freshers' Week in Bath" and they have been working with universities in the city to investigate.

A spokesperson for the force said in a statement today: "Officers from the Bath Neighbourhood Policing Team have liaised with colleagues from universities in the city and supported them and their Student Unions in approaching the relevant groups linked to the rumours, establishing if there is any truth to the rumours and briefing them on the appropriate conduct on a night out.

"Officers have also worked closely with Bath BID and pubs, bars and clubs as part of ongoing work to support the nighttime economy and help ensure students and other people socialising in Bath city centre can enjoy a safe night out.

"Throughout Freshers' Week, neighbourhood officers have attended and hosted more than 20 events to engage with students, provide crime prevention advice and help those who are new to the area stay safe.

“We have become aware of two reports of the possible spiking of a man and a woman in Bath. Enquiries into these incidents are ongoing.

“While we understand these incidents are incredibly concerning, we have seen a significant decline in the number of spiking incidents being reported to us in Bath in comparison to previous years.

“Officers continue to work closely with partner organisations and venues to support the safety of everyone enjoying the city's nightlife.

“If you suspect yourself or a friend has been spiked on a night out, prioritise seeking safety or medical attention and then call police at the earliest opportunity.”
