Langport Triathlon was suspended after a serious incident on the bike route required full access for emergency services, including the Air Ambulance.

Race organisers RaceNation Events confirmed that the decision was made immediately at yesterday's event to ensure paramedics could work safely.

A spokesperson said: “The safety and wellbeing of everyone in the community must always take priority. We appreciate this was unexpected, but it was the only option available.”

Many competitors had already passed through the affected section before the incident, but the remainder of the bike leg was cancelled.

Organisers say they are now working with the timing team to review race data to finalise results for those who completed the section and produce times for those who could not.

They stressed that the incident was completely separate from the event itself, and that no competitors, volunteers or race staff were involved.

“Our thoughts are with those directly affected,” organisers added.

“We are grateful to all participants, supporters and volunteers for their understanding and cooperation in these exceptional circumstances.”
