Coroner says Taunton teen's rail crossing death was accidental
Coroner rules on the tragic death of 17-year-old Harry Basham
An inquest has concluded the death of Harry Basham, who was struck by a fast-moving passenger train at the Venture Way pedestrian crossing in Taunton, was accidental.
The hearing took place on 21st May 2026 at Wells Town Hall, led by Mr David Sapiecha, Coroner for Somerset.
Harry Basham, a 17-year-old labourer, was familiar with the crossing, using it daily on his way to and from work.
The tragic incident occurred on 24th October 2025 at approximately 6:54 am.
Despite routine use of the crossing, it remains uncertain how the collision came to happen.
The coroner's report concluded that Harry Basham suffered multiple injuries consistent with being struck by a fast-moving train.
Somerset senior coroner Samantha Marsh said there was no evidence he "intended to harm himself" but accepted why he was on the track remained "unanswered".
A spokesperson for Network Rail said:
“Our thoughts remain with Harry’s family and friends and the local community following the tragic accident at the 5/13 railway crossing near Taunton in October.
"We will continue our engagement with local authorities, stakeholders and the community on the future of the crossing.”
