Taunton school hall to be replaced with a new modular structure

Somerset Council has confirmed plans to replace the aging and structurally compromised hall at Wellsprings Primary School in Taunton, investing up to £500,000 in a new modular building.
The current hall on Crowcombe Road, constructed using the Orlit prefabricated reinforced concrete method common in educational buildings from the 1950s to 1970s, has deteriorated significantly, posing a risk of collapse and restricting its use.
Due to safety concerns, the hall has been closed to pupils and staff, resulting in a shortage of space for assemblies and PE lessons.
In accordance with the Education Act 1996, Somerset Council ensures safe and well-maintained educational buildings, utilizing Department for Education (DfE) grants for essential repairs and updates.
The council's lead building surveyor, Nicola Johns, detailed the proposal emphasizing the condition of Orlit roof beams and panels, which necessitate ongoing management and have led to the current restrictions.
The new modular structure, to be installed on the school's playground, will offer 150 sq m of accessible space equipped with necessary amenities for educational activities and community engagement.
Ms. Johns highlighted the importance of the hall as a vital component of the school environment, providing necessary facilities for indoor PE, assemblies, and other events.
The project, funded wholly through DfE grants, is designed to offer a temporary solution while permanent alternatives are explored.
Details regarding the timeline for installation have yet to be announced by the council.
