Taunton Bowling Club seeks £25,000 to recover from Storm Chandra flooding
The club aims to raise funds through sponsorships and social events

The Taunton Bowling Club, located in Vivary Park, Somerset, has launched a fundraising campaign to secure £25,000 for repairing damage inflicted by Storm Chandra earlier this year.
In January, the relentless storm caused severe flooding at the club, saturating its indoor rink despite existing flood protection systems, according to club secretary Di Blackmore.
Di explained that water unexpectedly permeated the ground, bypassing the flood defences, and inundated the indoor rink. Volunteers worked tirelessly to remove the excess water and dry out the facilities.
Due to prior flooding incidents, the club is unable to acquire flood insurance, leaving them financially responsible for all repairs.
"We want to try and do everything that we can so that no matter what the weather in the future, we can be operational for all our members," Blackmore said.
The club has applied for financial assistance from Taunton Town Council and Sport England and is looking to organize social events for additional fundraising.
The first phase of renovations has already exceeded £20,000, with future phases expected to total an additional £28,000 to £30,000.
Taunton Bowling Club is also appealing to local businesses and individuals for sponsorships. Businesses would receive advertising opportunities in Vivary Park and around the rink in return.
The club is reaching out to its community for support, emphasizing its century-long history—having been established in October 1905—and its significance as a community hub.
"We are stronger together, and with your help, we can weather this storm and emerge even more determined to continue serving the community," Blackmore said.
