A major incident has been declared in Somerset following heavy rainfall and flooding caused by Storm Chandra.

Somerset Council, the Environment Agency, and emergency services say they are working together to respond to the situation after around 50mm of rain fell on saturated ground. Flood warnings remain in place for areas like Moorland, and with water moving through the system, there is still a high risk for the Somerset Levels and Moors.

Communities impacted by flooding

It is estimated that flooding has affected approximately 50 properties across Ilminster, West Coker, Taunton, Mudford, and West Camel, but numbers could rise in the coming days. Local Authority Liaison Officers are supporting households in these areas. Residents who’ve experienced flooding are urged to report it online via Somerset Council’s flooding self-service portal.

Council leader Bill Revans said the declaration of a major incident ensures resources are readily available to respond to worsening conditions.

“Storm Chandra brought more than 50mm of rain to parts of Somerset last night, on top of already saturated land, and this has caused widespread disruption. Please avoid travelling if you can and never attempt to drive through flood water," he said.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for updated flood warnings via the GOV.UK flooding service.

Travel and school disruptions

Numerous roads in Somerset remain flooded or blocked with debris after overnight rainfall. Council teams are working on clearing impacted routes but urge people to check updates on the Travel Somerset Facebook page and Roadworks and Travel Information online before travelling.

Around 30 schools were closed yesterday (27/01) due to conditions and updates on closures for the coming days can be found on Somerset Council’s school closures page.

Recycling and rubbish collection updates

Flooding has disrupted waste collections in several areas, with recovery efforts planned later in the week. Missed recycling and garden waste collections could be resumed on Saturday, 31st January. Residents should leave out garden waste bins and re-present recycling on their next scheduled day.

Missed collections can be reported online at Somerset Council’s missed collection webpage.

Supporting vulnerable residents

Emergency responders continue to focus on helping vulnerable individuals and families impacted by flooding. Advice and guidance are available online for those worried about flooding. If flooding poses a serious risk to life, people should contact emergency services on 999.

Somerset Council has also advised residents evacuating their homes to remember necessary medication and stay informed on social media for updates.

Further updates on the flooding situation are expected on 28th January.
