Attempt to complete Somerset's Strawberry Line cycle route hits roadblock

Efforts to secure path under Ridge Road hampered by lack of support from Historic Railways Estate

Efforts to secure a crucial part of Somerset's Strawberry Line cycle route are facing challenges due to a lack of cooperation from the Historic Railways Estate (HRE).

The Strawberry Line, a multi-user path, currently stretches from Yatton railway station to Labourham Way in Cheddar, with plans to reach Collett Park in Shepton Mallet.

However, the remaining gap between Ridge Road and Dulcote needs to be closed for full connectivity.

The Strawberry Line Society has been striving to open up an arch beneath Ridge Road.

Over two years have passed since this plan was announced, but progress has been stalled without HRE's approval to open the arch.

The group aims to use part of the arch as a safe passageway for pedestrians and cyclists.

More than two years after the partnership was announced, there has been little progress without HRE's cooperation.

The former railway bridge, Stump Cross Bridge, has had its arches filled by HRE.

Mr. Fletcher, chairman of the Strawberry Line Society, expressed frustration during a visit to the site on February 12th.

He shared the Society’s concerns, saying the third arch could be cleared with minimal disturbance to existing bat habitats.

Much of the existing path between Ridge Road and Collett Park was completed in March 2023.

Greenways and Cycle Routes have acquired a small plot of land that allows re-routing the Strawberry Line.

Mr. Fletcher expressed frustation at the situation, as Ridge Road sees frequent agricultural traffic and becomes busier during events like the Glastonbury Festival.

In addition to its pledge to conservation, the Strawberry Line Society wants to ensure that local bats are safeguarded amid proposed changes.

He said, “HRE shouldn’t disturb the bats without getting a licence from Natural England – and we’re with that.”

While considering environmental concerns, Mr. Fletcher described the potential path as offering scenic views.

Somerset Council is poised to award grant funding for the project in late-March, according to its executive forward plan.

Confidence remains that with cooperation from HRE, work on the new section could begin in the summer.

The Society has informed MP Tessa Munt, being prepared to take political action if necessary.

HRE's project manager, Matthew Irwin, confirmed commitment to collaborating with stakeholders for a solution.

He emphasized ongoing efforts to gather more safety data and review structural options.

Any joint decision over future plans will be communicated in due course.
