Railway passengers in south Somerset should prepare for five months of disruption due to ongoing roadworks linked to a large housing development.

Taylor Wimpey Exeter is currently constructing the Wool Gardens estate in Crewkerne, which will eventually include 635 homes, a care home, commercial space, and a relief road connecting the A30 Yeovil Road and the A356 Station Road.

Residents currently have access via the Blacknell Lane Industrial Estate, which leads to Crewkerne town centre and the railway station located in Misterton.

Temporary traffic lights were installed on Tuesday morning, April 7th, signaling the start of new junction construction on Station Road.

This follows a revised agreement permitting the developer to postpone junction delivery until close to 200 homes are completed, rather than the earlier stage of 55 homes.

Julie Chant from Space4Crewkerne has voiced dissatisfaction regarding delays in road infrastructure, originally earmarked as essential for the development.

She noted existing congestion and increased traffic in surrounding areas as a consequence.

Councillor Mike Rigby highlighted plans to begin southern junction works in April, aiming for completion later in the year.

Motorists should be aware that two-way temporary traffic lights will persist until 31st August 2025.

Crewkerne Station serves the London Waterloo to Exeter St. David’s line, managed by South Western Railway.

Passengers can anticipate extended journey times, especially during peak travel periods due to these roadworks.
