Leisure facilities across Somerset have been safeguarded following a new partnership between Somerset Council and national operator Freedom Leisure.

After the previous operator, Fusion Lifestyle went into administration, Somerset Council swiftly arranged for Freedom Leisure to take over operations for a two-year interim period starting Wednesday, 1st July, ensuring continuity for leisure centre users, staff, and local communities in the east of the county.

The centres, including Frome Leisure Centre, Strode Swimming and Fitness, Shepton Mallet Lido, Tor Sports and Leisure Centre, and Wells Leisure Centre, will continue operating as usual with no immediate changes to services, pricing, or memberships.

In the short term, efforts will be concentrated on maintaining accessible, safe, and well-functioning facilities, providing uninterrupted access to gyms, swimming pools, and leisure programmes.

Somerset Council and Freedom Leisure have committed to working collaboratively, aiming to support employees, maintain operational standards, and respond effectively to community needs.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Communities, expressed satisfaction with the arrangements, "We are very pleased to have secured continuity for these leisure centres which are so important for health and wellbeing. We recognise that this has been a difficult time for staff and customers, and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and dedication.

She emphasised the importance of providing stability and reassurance for attendees and highlighted the council's commitment to ensuring long-term sustainability for these facilities.

Freedom Leisure, already managing services in other parts of Somerset including Yeovil, Wincanton, Chard, and Bridgwater, affirmed their eagerness to facilitate a smooth transition, "We are delighted to be working with Somerset Council to support leisure services in the east of the county.

"Our immediate priority is to ensure a smooth transition and maintain services for customers. We will be visible on site, supporting staff and listening to feedback, while working with the council to understand longer-term opportunities.

"The collaborative venture will concentrate on maintaining dependable services, supporting staff and users during the transition, addressing operational necessities, and seeking feedback from centre users and local communities. "
