Somerset Wildlife Trust has raised concerns about the impact of recent hot weather on bumblebees and wildlife in the area.
Simon Clarke, head of Nature Recovery Projects at the trust, has explained how the warmer temperatures pose a significant challenge for bumblebees, which are adapted to colder climates.
During hot weather, bumblebees struggle to maintain their body temperature due to their fluffy bodies, which are designed to retain heat.
Clarke noted that temperatures above 27 degrees can cause difficulties for bees, with risks increasing as it climbs to the high 30s or even 40 degrees.
This can prevent them from flying and fulfilling their role in nature.
Climate Change Impacts
Clarke expressed concerns over the wider impacts of climate change, including extreme weather variations.
Periods of intense heat followed by heavy rain are becoming more common, affecting bees by flooding their nests.
The trust aims to combat these effects by creating more spaces for nature, allowing wildlife corridors to foster biodiversity and resilience.
Helping Bumblebees in Your Garden
Individuals can support bumblebees by developing wildlife-friendly gardens that provide essential resources like food and shelter.
"Flowers and shade and water, you know, if you've got the ability to have like a little, it doesn't matter how big it is, but a little wildlife garden with some flowers, with a bit of water, with some shade and things," Clarke said.
These elements help bees to maintain their body temperature and provide them with the energy they need.
Having diverse plant life ensures a steady source of nectar, while water features can help bees to cool down and replenish fluids.
Shaded areas offer vital relief during high temperatures.
Creating Wildlife Corridors
Clarke emphasised the importance of designing gardens that connect with other green spaces, forming corridors that allow for greater shelter and food availability.
This approach is not only beneficial for bees but also enhances the resilience of entire ecosystems.
