Today (11 May) marks Somerset Day!

The event is commemorated every year on this day, celebrating the enduring legacy and community spirit of Somerset.

It marks the call to arms by Alfred the Great and the gathering of Somerset's people to confront the Viking invasion in 878, symbolising Somerset’s resilience and unity.

Chosen through an online poll in 2015 that attracted over 8,000 votes, 11th May is a date of historical resonance for Somerset.

Several significant historical events coincide with this date.

In the year 978, Somerset-born St Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury, oversaw King Edgar’s coronation at Bath Abbey.

This historic event laid the foundation for modern coronation ceremonies.

Additionally, the second siege of Taunton ended on 11th May 1645 when Royalist forces withdrew, a pivotal event in the English Civil War.

Alfred the Great, the sole monarch to bear the title 'Great,' is renowned for his leadership and strategic prowess during these tumultuous times.

After his surprise defeat by Vikings in January 878, Alfred retreated to Athelney, Somerset’s marshlands, before rallying forces to defeat the invaders at Edington later that May.

This victory, followed by a peace agreement with Viking leader Guthrum at Aller, established the groundwork for what would eventually become the kingdom of England.

Somerset Day offers an opportunity to explore this rich history and partake in celebrations that honour Somerset’s cultural heritage.
