Harry Foster, a primary school teacher from Wellington, Somerset, is preparing to run the London Marathon in memory of his 15-month-old daughter, Olivia, who passed away suddenly in October 2023 due to acute viral myocarditis.

Foster explained that training for the marathon has allowed him to feel closer to Olivia and to keep her memory alive. He said Olivia loved spending time outdoors, and running has been a way for him to connect with her.

Having started running seriously about a year ago, Foster is gearing up to tackle the renowned 26.2-mile course on 26th April 2026 with the goal of finishing in under four hours.

Foster will run the marathon to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, which played a significant role in Olivia’s medical care. Foster said, "For me, supporting Great Ormond Street is my way of saying thank you for the incredible care that Olivia received. It's about giving something back to those who helped us during such a difficult time."

Be More Like Olivia Initiative

In honour of Olivia, Harry has embraced the motto "Be More Like Olivia," encouraging people to embody Olivia's joyful and adventurous spirit. Foster commented, "The Be More Like Olivia mantra is about sharing her happiness and zest for life. It's really important for us to spread that message, to inspire others as she has inspired us."

Fundraising Efforts and Community Involvement

Foster is dedicated to raising funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, as the hospital played a significant role in Olivia’s medical care. So far, he has raised £8,900, and his efforts have inspired others to join in fundraising activities.

Among the initiatives is the '5K a day in May' fundraiser, which has been held annually since 2024. The event invites people to run, walk or cycle 5 kilometres every day in May to raise money while fostering a sense of community and improving participants' physical and mental health. Foster noted the campaign has spread internationally, with friends and colleagues participating worldwide.

Raising Awareness About Myocarditis

Foster’s participation in the marathon also aims to raise awareness about myocarditis. According to the British Heart Foundation, this rare condition is typically caused by a viral infection. While most people recover without lasting effects, myocarditis can be severe in rare instances. Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations, and anyone experiencing these should seek medical attention immediately.

Harry Foster’s journey to the London Marathon serves not only as a personal tribute to his daughter but as a powerful initiative encouraging collective action in support of vital charities and awareness campaigns.
