Solar panels now powering Bridgwater community hub
Solar panels have now been installed at a community hub in Bridgwater, provided by the council
Solar panels have been installed at the ReCreation Community Hub in Bridgwater, with the new system now fully operational.
Bridgwater Town Council says the installation is expected to generate around 16,140 kWh of electricity each year, enough to provide approximately 35% of the building's annual energy needs.
The project was made possible after the Council secured grant funding covering 75% of the installation costs, reducing the amount needed from local taxpayers.
The Council took over the centre in 2023 and opened it as a community hub in January 2024.
It now welcomes almost 300 people each week, with activities, support services and community groups using the facility.
The solar panels, fitted to the centre's roof, will generate renewable electricity on site and are expected to help reduce both the building's carbon emissions and its energy bills.
Councillor Tim Mander, chair of the amenities committee, said the installation was a “significant milestone” for the Council's sustainability plans.
He said: “By producing clean energy on-site, we are reducing our carbon footprint while improving the Centre's long-term financial resilience.
“This investment demonstrates our commitment to creating a greener future for Bridgwater while continuing to provide an inclusive and welcoming community space.”
The Council says the project is part of its wider plans to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and make its community facilities more financially sustainable.
