Road finally reopens in Castle Cary following complex sinkhole repairs

Station Road in Castle Cary has reopened to traffic following complex repairs to a sinkhole and culvert beneath the road.

The repairs were carried out after the sinkhole appeared in the carriageway, initially prompting temporary traffic lights to be installed by Somerset Council in July 2024.

What appeared to be a localised depression revealed more significant issues with the culvert and nearby utility services during an initial repair attempt.

The restricted watercourse was fully examined after the excavation of the road.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Highways and Transport, expressed gratitude to those affected by the works for their patience and understanding.

Complex Engineering Works

Richard Wilkins said the repairs took longer than expected due to the need to fully understand the conditions beneath the road and provide a safe, long-lasting solution.

As investigations progressed, the design was adapted to conditions found on-site, resulting in a repair that will protect the highway for years.

Deep excavation and investigation, alongside close coordination with utility companies, were required for the project.

Tom Stockley, Operations Manager for Kier in Somerset, emphasised the scheme's complexity and the careful planning and collaboration needed to deliver a durable repair.

Utility services located near the excavation area necessitated the installation of temporary works before permanent repairs could begin.

Restored Access

The reopening of Station Road restores normal access through an essential part of Castle Cary, marking the successful completion of a challenging engineering project.

The council collaborated with developers, utility companies, and local stakeholders to minimise disruption during the works and ensure a safe completion.

This effort highlights how the council and its partners adapted designs as site conditions became apparent to ensure robust, long-term repairs.
