Rail Minister admits strong case for better rail services in Bridgwater
Lord Hendy acknowledged the town's strong economic case, for enhanced rail connectivity
The campaign, for improved rail services in Bridgwater, has received a significant boost, after Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, acknowledged the town's strong economic case for enhanced rail connectivity.
He also recognised the importance of considering Bridgwater's future growth, in rail planning discussions.
In a letter, responding to representations made by Bridgwater Town Council and local rail campaigners, the Minister highlighted Bridgwater's growing importance within the Bristol to Exeter corridor and recognised the transformational impact of major developments including Hinkley Point C, the Gravity Enterprise Zone, housing growth and expanding employment opportunities.
The response follows detailed work by the Bridgwater Rail Forum, supported by Labour councillors and local partners, to build the case for better rail services that match the town's economic ambitions.
Lord Hendy wrote: "I am grateful to you for setting out such a comprehensive case for enhanced rail connectivity at Bridgwater." He added that the points raised regarding the town's "economic growth, expanding employment base and strategic importance within the Bristol to Exeter corridor are well made."
The Minister also recognised that Bridgwater's recent growth is changing travel patterns and increasing the importance of attractive rail links for commuters, businesses and leisure travellers.
Importantly, the Department for Transport agreed that future discussions about rail services should consider not only current passenger numbers but also the significant growth potential of the area. The Minister stated that rail has a"critical role to play in supporting sustainable economic development and reducing reliance on road transport" along the increasingly busy corridor.
Councillor Tim Mander, from Bridgwater Town Council’s Transport Forum, said, "This is a very encouraging response which acknowledges exactly what local people, businesses and campaigners have been saying for some time. Bridgwater is growing rapidly and our rail services need to keep pace with that growth.
"The Minister has recognised the strength of the evidence put forward and the importance of Bridgwater as a major economic centre. While there is more work to do, this is an important step forward and demonstrates that our case is being heard at the highest levels."
The Transport Forum has played a key role in bringing together evidence, local expertise and stakeholder support to champion improved rail services. Its work has highlighted the need for future rail planning to reflect the town's rapid expansion and its growing contribution to the regional economy.
The Minister's letter also references opportunities, identified in Network Rail's Bristol to Exeter Corridor Study, including the potential for service enhancements through Bridgwater, while noting that any future changes would require further assessment and planning.
The Transport Forum and local representatives say they will continue working with Government, Network Rail and the wider rail industry to ensure Bridgwater remains firmly on the agenda as future investment and service development plans are considered.
