Push for 'crucial opportunity to connect connectivity' in Somerset
Representatives from Somerset - including MP Gideon Amos - will be pressing the case for Wellington and Cullompton Stations to get 'back on track'
Gideon Amos MP is leading a delegation to Parliament today - to press the case for the Wellington and Cullompton Stations project to get 'back on track'.
The party travelling to London – which includes a number of Wellington town councillors – will meet the Rail Minister, Lord Hendy.
The stations project remains under review by the government after the ending of the ‘Restoring Your Railway’ programme last summer.
Mr Amos said: “This project is a crucial opportunity to improve connectivity, leisure, and business opportunities across the South West.
“I’m determined to see it through and I’m working closely with Richard Foord, MP for Honiton & Sidmouth, to make it happen.
“We will be in London to demonstrate the widespread support for the project.”
The delegation will hand Lord Hendy two letters backing the stations – from a group of South West MPs and from the town council.
Mr Amos has already met the Secretary of State of Transport, Heidi Alexander, and Lord Hendy to press home the case for the stations.
“We will continue to press hard for the project to go ahead and will not rest until these vital stations are reopened,” he added.
A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “We are committed to delivering transport infrastructure that will boost growth and opportunity across the whole country, as part of our Plan for Change.
“The Government inherited an extremely challenging financial position, and these projects will be subject to the upcoming Spending Review.”
We're told that no decisions on the future of rail infrastructure will be taken until the Spending Review, where every single pound of taxpayers’ money will be scrutinised to ensure it delivers on the Government's Plan for Change.
