Psychologist Megan Rowley returns to Bridgwater College to inspire students
Her visit aimed to provide students with insights into a career in clinical psychology
Dr Megan Rowley, a paediatric clinical psychologist at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, has returned to Bridgwater College to inspire psychology students considering a career in the field.
Dr Rowley first studied psychology at Bridgwater College as a teenager. Her recent visit aimed to offer students an inside look at the profession and the path she took to her current role in the NHS.
The visit came about when one of Dr Rowley's former lecturers reached out to see if she would be willing to speak to students.
"I actually went to Bridgwater College myself, and I studied psychology there," Dr Rowley said. "At the time, I was really interested in clinical psychology, but I didn’t actually know what a clinical psychologist did."
Dr Rowley explained that she wanted to give students a realistic picture of what the role involves, providing insights she wished she had received during her own studies.
"It’s quite a timely point for them, and they really value the chance to ask questions and think about whether this is the right path for them," she said.
During her visit, Dr Rowley discussed her educational journey from Bridgwater College to her undergraduate, master’s and doctoral training at the University of Exeter. She offered a "day in the life" overview of working as a paediatric clinical psychologist, touching on both the academic and practical sides of the profession.
She shared insights on her experiences, including her challenges with research methods, aiming to offer an honest conversation that could resonate with students.
Her sessions have received positive feedback, with students expressing how they help visualise what life might be like as a clinical psychologist. One student shared that seeing Dr Rowley's progression to her NHS role made the path seem achievable.
Dr Rowley also provided information about work experience opportunities with the trust and the broader implications of psychology in various health professions.
Principal Jason Gunningham praised the visit, stating, "Our A Level students found Megan’s visit incredibly inspiring, and it was fantastic to welcome her back to Bridgwater College."
He emphasised the value of hearing directly from former students who have successfully pursued careers in psychology, boosting students’ confidence in their potential futures.
