An annual charity cricket tournament held in memory of University of Nottingham student Barnaby Webber will return to Highfields Sports Ground this Sunday (May 10).

The Barnaby Webber Cup, organised by the University of Nottingham Men’s Cricket Club, was established following the 2023 Nottingham attacks, in which 19-year-old Barnaby Webber was killed alongside fellow student Grace O’Malley-Kumar and school caretaker Ian Coates.

The tournament will see four sides compete across the day: the University of Nottingham MCC, a Nottingham Alumni team, a Nottingham XI and a Taunton XI captained by Barnaby’s brother.

Organisers say the event has grown steadily since it was first introduced, attracting strong support from students, alumni and local cricket clubs.

This year, they hope to expand awareness beyond the university community and encourage more people from across Nottingham to attend.

Ollie Chaplin, from the University of Nottingham Men's Cricket Club, said it's a day to honour Barnaby, through the sport he loved.

"Barnaby loved cricket. It was an enormous part of his life. I think it's a fitting way to honour him, playing the sport he loved."

Barnaby, originally from Taunton in Somerset, was a keen sportsman and a member of the university cricket club before his death.

The inclusion of the Taunton XI has become a significant part of the fixture, reflecting the continued involvement of Barnaby’s family and hometown friends.

Ollie Chaplin continued:

"It's comforting to see so many people come together... everyone has that shared passion for it."

As well as serving as a memorial, the tournament raises money for charitable causes.

The Barnaby Webber Cup takes place at Highfields Sports Ground on Sunday, May 10. Beginning at 9:30am, spectators are welcome throughout the day.
