North Somerset Council issues squishy toy safety warning
Trading Standards officers from the council have visited various retailers across the region
North Somerset Council has issued a warning to consumers about the safety of popular children's "squishy" toys following a recent crackdown on potentially unsafe products in local shops.
Trading Standards officers from the council visited various retailers across North Somerset, resulting in the removal of more than 300 squishy toys from 26 different types due to concerns about their compliance with UK legislation.
The squishy toys, often resembling food items like bao buns, noodles, and butter sticks, were found lacking the necessary CE or UKCA markings. Some toys also displayed well-known brand names without proper authorization, raising further compliance issues.
In addition to the squishy toys, the operation led to the removal of over 750 other non-compliant toys, more than 230 mislabelled cosmetic products, and children's clothing with prohibited hood cords posing a strangulation risk.
Councillor James Clayton, Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, Sports and Pride in Place programme at North Somerset Council, emphasised the dangers of counterfeit and non-compliant toys.
"Toys sold in the UK must meet strict safety requirements designed to protect children," Clayton said.
He urged parents and carers to exercise caution when purchasing toys from unfamiliar sellers or those offered at unusually low prices.
The Trading Standards team at North Somerset Council intends to continue working with businesses to ensure consumer safety and uphold legitimate business standards.
Clayton also encouraged the public to report any suspicions regarding unsafe or counterfeit products immediately.
"We are committed to protecting residents in our communities – especially children – from unsafe products," he added.
