A major new surgical centre has officially opened at Musgrove Park Hospital in Somerset, promising faster access to surgery and state-of-the-art facilities for patients.
The centre, known as King’s Building, has been developed by Kier and combines operating theatres, endoscopy services, and theatre admissions within a specially designed facility.
This latest addition includes eight operating theatres, six endoscopy rooms, and a 22-bed intensive care unit, which aims to enhance the experience for patients and healthcare staff during and after surgery, as well as expand capacity to help diminish treatment waiting times.

The opening of this new centre marks a significant advancement in healthcare facilities within Somerset, designed to support future healthcare requirements and developments.
Martin Wilkinson, chief operating officer for NHS England South West, expressed enthusiasm for the new unit, noting that it supports surgical hubs across the region and enhances the experience for both staff and patients.
David Shannon, director of strategy and digital development at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, described the opening as a “hugely important milestone,” highlighting additional capacity and improved patient experiences.
A significant development within the centre is the introduction of dedicated hybrid operating theatres, combining imaging technology and surgery in a single space.
Miss Natasha Chinai, a consultant vascular surgeon at the trust, emphasised the transformation in care for vascular patients enabled by these new facilities.
Advanced Technology in Operating Theatres
Equipped with cutting-edge lighting, imaging, and digital technologies, the operating theatres are built to modern standards, allowing for potential future implementations like robotic-assisted surgery.
Mr Tom Edwards, a consultant general surgeon at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, expressed excitement at the opportunities for combined surgical and image-guided treatments in this updated environment.
Enhanced connections between theatres, inpatient areas, and support services are expected to improve efficiency and workflow for both patients and staff.
Intensive Care and Endoscopy Facilities
The intensive care unit offers single ensuite rooms with increased natural light and outdoor access, improving privacy and the environment for critical care patients.
Dr Fiona Dempsey, a consultant in intensive care and anaesthesia, highlighted the patient-focused and collaborative nature of this new unit.
Additionally, a new endoscopy unit has been designed around patient comfort, privacy, and dignity, with contemporary facilities to support specialist training.
Dr Emma Wesley, a consultant gastroenterologist, remarked on the significant investment in Somerset’s endoscopy services and the expected improvement in patient care.
