A murder investigation is underway following the death of a nine-year-old girl at an address in Weston-super-Mare.
Police were called to Lime Close, in the Mead Vale area, at 6.09pm on Monday 15th December after being alerted by paramedics.
Officers arrived at 6:12pm.
The young girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say a teenage boy was arrested on suspicion of murder in the neighbouring area of Worle.
He remains in custody.
Superintendent Jen Appleford said: “We know the whole of Weston-super-Mare will be distraught and shocked to learn of this utterly dreadful news.
“The girl’s family were informed last night of what had happened. It is impossible for us to adequately put into words the pain and anguish they are feeling right now.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to them, and we’ll ensure they receive support from a specially-trained officer.”
Police have confirmed that the formal identification of the victim has not been completed, and a post-mortem examination, will take place.
As enquiries continue, police have urged people not to speculate about the circumstances or the identities of those involved, saying this could cause further distress to the grieving family.
A police cordon remains in place in Lime Close, and officers have started preliminary house-to-house enquiries.
Superintendent Appleford added: “We have no doubt the community will come together as one in response to this tragedy.
“Enquiries are being carried out at the property as part of our investigation, and we’d ask for people’s patience and understanding while that work is undertaken.”
Police have assured the public there is no indication of increased risk to wider safety.
Officers will maintain an increased presence in the area in the coming days, offering support and reassurance to residents.
Superintendent Appleford added: “We will continue to provide updates to the public as our investigation progresses.”
