More than 100 North Somerset bin collectors vote for strike action

Residents of North Somerset are facing not having their bins collected after refuse workers voted to take strike action.
More than 100 members of GMB Union at North Somerset Environment Company voted to walk out in a row over pay.
The trade union claims a new deal would leave its members paid up to £4 per hour less than other refuse collectors in the region.
GMB representatives will now meet to decide on strike dates.
Lorraine Gaskell, GMB Regional Organiser, said:
“These workers are out on our streets in the rain, the cold and the heat, collecting the bins and keeping our communities clean and safe.
"They’re not asking for the earth — they’re asking to be paid fairly for the work they do and in line with what others in the neighbouring councils already earn for the same job.
"Instead, they’ve been handed another rubbish rise that leaves them at the back of the queue.
The ballot results send a clear message, these members are not prepared to take it any more.
"But they last thing they want to do is go on strike and GMB remains open to further talks aimed at securing a meaningful increase to the offer."
A North Somerset Environment Company spokesperson said:
‘North Somerset Environment Company does not comment on the detail of pay negotiations. Discussions with the GMB Union remain ongoing and the Company remains committed to seeking a negotiated resolution.’
