A government initiative to provide employment support through mobile Jobcentre vans is expanding its reach to North Somerset.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is increasing its fleet of Jobcentre on Wheels vehicles to include six additional areas, aiming to improve access to employment support services.

These areas are Barrow-in-Furness, Blackpool, Wakefield, North Nottinghamshire, Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taf, and North Somerset.

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden emphasised the importance of the initiative in breaking down barriers to employment, highlighting the benefits of taking services directly to communities, such as outside leisure centres and in parks.

He said, "We want to break down the barriers that stop people from finding good work, and that means meeting people where they are."

The move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle the rising unemployment rate and fulfil manifesto commitments for employment support reform.

The initiative follows successful trials in the Scottish Highlands, North and Mid Wales, and Greater Manchester.

According to DWP data, more than half of those who visited the mobile service were not receiving benefits, indicating the reach of the programme to those seeking employment without government assistance.

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show that unemployment among those aged 16 and over increased to 5.1% between September and November last year, up from 4.4% during the same period in the previous year.
