Marine Lake set to re-open ready for summer season
The tidal lake, which is usually open all year round, has been closed since 6 October 2025 to enable extensive improvement work to be carried out
Weston-super-Mare’s Marine Lake is set to re-open to the public this week.
North Somerset Council says it'll be ready to be enjoyed by residents and visitors from Friday (22 May) at 3pm.
The tidal lake, which is usually open all year round, has been closed since 6 October 2025 to enable extensive improvement work to be carried out as part of the council’s placemaking vision for Weston.
The council says this has been made possible thanks an allocation from the total £20m awarded to the authority by the UK government.
Cllr Mike Solomon, Chairperson of North Somerset Council’s Corporate, Assets, Transport and Environmental Services Policy and Scrutiny Committee, said:
“Marine Lake is such an important attraction on Weston’s seafront. I'm delighted that this work has resulted in an improved all-year-round swimming and watersports destination which remains free of charge and ready to be enjoyed again by both residents and visitors alike.
"Huge thanks must go to the officers involved, particularly from our placemaking, projects and seafront teams, and our contractor EJ McGrath for completing the work in time for the second May bank holiday and start of the school holidays, despite the challenges of working in a marine environment.
"I’d also like to thank the volunteers of the Weston Marine Lake Mudlarks for their continued support. While the lake has been closed, the Mudlarks led on work to create a new deep water swimming channel across the width of the lake. This was made possible thanks to the social value commitment within the council’s contact with EJ McGrath.
"With the re-opening of the lake and many big events this year, we’re all set for a busy and exciting summer in Weston."
Jan Doyle, one of the directors of the Mudlarks, said:
"We’re overjoyed at the reopening of our smart new lake. The Mudlarks have been involved in campaigning and working with the council to plan improvements at the lake since the dredging carried out in 2022. We look forward to continuing our work to ensure the lake is a safer place for swimming and the stunning attraction it deserves to be.
"Our aim to be a bridge between the council and the large community of lake users – not just swimmers but paddleboarders, walkers, coffee-drinkers and holiday makers.
“On behalf of all the Mudlarks, I’d like to thank council officers who have worked so hard to make this happen. I’d also like to thank EJ McGrath for doing such a great job, for being so approachable and for the bonus of our new swimming channel. We hope to fundraise for further improvements in the future. If you would like to know more, or volunteer, please look at our website at www.westonmarinelake.co.uk. See you in the water!"
The council says it will continue to work closely with consultants and the Mudlarks on the future arrangements for the restored lake, including the management of silt.
