A man has been jailed for attacking another man with a wine bottle in a convenience store in Taunton, leaving him with permanent scarring.

Christopher Cornish, 35, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison at Taunton Crown Court on 14th January.

He pleaded guilty to section 18 grievous bodily harm, intent to resist arrest, and theft.

The incident began on the evening of 18th August last year, when Cornish was carrying out a theft at a store on East Street.

The victim, a man in his fifties, detained Cornish while he was carrying out a theft in the store, before he was struck with force to the neck with a glass bottle, causing it to smash.

Cornish then continued to attack the victim with a second bottle, by striking him to the forehead, causing him to lose consciousness and a significant amount of blood.

Emergency Services arrived quickly to provide assistance, and the victim was rushed to hospital.

Police say the victim required 16 stitches, 10 hours of medical treatment, and a 90-minute operation, but has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

DC Matt Barrett, officer in the case, said: “This was a truly horrific incident which left a man with significant injuries, and the permanent scarring he has suffered will serve as a constant reminder of the ordeal.

“Cornish carried out a violent and unjust attack on the victim who stepped in to apprehend him from committing a theft within the store.

“There were significant aggravating factors within this case, and I would like to thank the police officers and paramedics who attended and treated the victim’s injuries within minutes of the attack.”
