The M5 southbound in Somerset is currently closed between junctions 22 (Burnham on Sea) and 23 (Puriton) following a serious collision involving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and a car.

National Highways reported that the incident occurred shortly before 04:30 today and resulted in a significant diesel spill and damage to the nearside barrier.

Emergency services, including Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue, are at the scene managing the situation.

Traffic within the closed section is being gradually released to pass the scene using lane 3, following which the vehicle recovery and site cleanup will be addressed.

Diversion guidance

Drivers impacted by the closure are advised to follow the Solid Diamond diversion signs, exiting the M5 at junction 22 and taking the A38 (Bristol Road) southbound, before proceeding onto the A39 (Down End) and rejoining the motorway at junction 23.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys carefully, allowing for extra travel time or considering alternative routes while the road remains shut.
