A lorry tasked with repairing a massive sinkhole became trapped over the weekend after falling into the opening in Walton, Somerset.

Workmen from the company Stabilised Pavements are reported to have arrived at Butleigh Drive to address severe subsidence impacting the rural road.

During the operation, a section of the unstable road gave way, causing one side of the lorry to become lodged in what was later identified as a significant pothole.

A spokesperson for Somerset Council confirmed that highway works are underway on Butleigh Moor Drove, which is also referred to as Butleigh Drove, near Walton.

The spokesperson explained that the road is built on peat and has endured significant movement and rutting, adding that such issues can occasionally arise under these conditions.

The council has scheduled the recovery of the affected lorry for today, 11th May.

Following the recovery, the site will be assessed to determine the best approach for completing the necessary repairs.

Their statement in full read: “Somerset Council can confirm that planned highway works are taking place on Butleigh Moor Drove (also known as Butleigh Drove) near Walton, and these works are being delivered by contractors.

"The road is constructed on peat and has experienced significant movement and rutting. Issues of this nature can occasionally arise when carrying out works in these conditions.

"We understand the lorry involved in the works is due to be recovered today (Monday 11 May).

"The site will then be assessed to determine the most appropriate approach to complete the repairs.”
