Liberal Democrats win two seats on Somerset Council
Residents in Dunster and Glastonbury went to the polls to elect new councillors
The Liberal Democrats have now added two further councillors to their group on Somerset Council after by-election victories overnight.
Cara Strom won the Dunster seat with a majority of 476, whilst Ewan Cameron won the Glastonbury seat by a majority of 359.
The two vacancies on the council came with Glastonbury’s Liberal Democrat division member Nick Cottle passing away in early-August and Dunster’s Conservative division member Christine Lawrence announcing her retirement in early-September.
Speaking after her victory, Cllr Strom said: “This result shows that people want a councillor who listens, works hard, and puts the community and will do all I can to ensure local voices are heard loud and clear.”
“People have been telling me on the doorsteps that the Liberal Democrats are hardworking people - the party that brings communities together and stands up for the most vulnerable in our society.”
Reform UK came second on both ballots, with Labour finishing bottom.
The Conservative Party stood candidates in both area, finishing third. Whilst the Green Party candidate in Glastonbury came fourth.
Turnout was just over 30% for both divisions.
