The Revd Jo Stobart has been appointed as the next Archdeacon of Wells and Residentiary Canon of Wells Cathedral, marking a return to Bath and Wells after her role as Chaplain to the Bishop of Exeter.

Stobart succeeds Anne Gell, who stepped down earlier this month after nine years in the position.

Her return is anticipated in the late autumn.

Bishop Michael expressed his excitement about Stobart's appointment, highlighting her abilities and dedication to the Somerset area and rural ministry.

Stobart herself expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I am overjoyed and honoured to be the next Archdeacon of Wells and Residentiary Canon of Wells Cathedral. The call to serve in this role was a tug at my vocational heart strings that I could not ignore.”

She looks forward to supporting the parish communities of the Wells Archdeaconry and engaging with the mission of the Cathedral.

Her husband Ian, a Reader, shares her advocacy for shared ministry.

Stobart plans to integrate her love for teaching and learning, particularly with children and young people, into her new responsibilities.

In the past, she enjoyed singing lessons in Ilminster and hopes to further her musical education at the Cathedral.

Toby Wright, the Dean of Wells, praised Stobart's appointment and the skills she brings, noting the diverse pool of candidates and her clear suitability for the role.

Jo Stobart hails from West London and has a background in education, having trained as a primary school teacher.

She established Southwark Cathedral's Education Centre and has extensive teaching experience in the southeast.

In 2006, she relocated to Bath and Wells, where her path to ordination began.

Ordained as a deacon at Wells Cathedral in 2015, Stobart has since held roles as Vicar, Assistant and Area Dean, as well as pursuing further theological studies.

Her representation in Church of England committees includes General Synod and the Crown Nominations Commission.

Beyond her ecclesiastical duties, Stobart enjoys gardening, the arts, dog walking, and spending time with family.
