Investigation underway after couple assaulted on Hildesheim Bridge in Weston-super-Mare

Police say the man and woman were returning home from a night out when the incident happened

Police are investigating after a man and woman were assaulted on a bridge in Weston-super-Mare.

It was reported that the couple, who are in their early twenties, were returning home from a night out when they were approached by an unknown man on Hildesheim Bridge between 4am and 5.30am on Sunday 3 May.

Police say the male victim lost consciousness and suffered facial injuries after he was subjected to a "violent assault" by a man.

He required hospital treatment but has since been discharged to continue his recovery at home.

The female victim suffered a minor back injury after she was reportedly pushed by the offender while attempting to intervene.

Officers have been carrying out enquiries and are now asking for the public's help to identify the suspect who is described as a man believed to be in his mid to late twenties - approximately 5ft 10ins tall and white, with blond hair, and wearing blue jeans, a beige coat and a cap.

Anyone who saw a man a man matching this description in the Weston-super-Mare area during the evening of Saturday 2 May or the early hours of Sunday 3 May are being urged to contact Avon and Somerset Police.
