Hundreds celebrated at Celebrating Care and Achievement event in Somerset
The celebration highlighted the determination, resilience, talent, and achievements of the young people in the region
Over 570 young individuals in Somerset were recently acknowledged at the Celebrating Care and Achievement event hosted by Somerset Council.
Held at Wellsprings Leisure Centre in Taunton, the event brought together children, young people, carers, families, and professionals.
The celebration highlighted the determination, resilience, talent, and achievements of the young people in the region.
Having undergone enhancements this year, the event, which was formerly known as the Annual Achievement Awards, expanded its focus to include all children looked after and care experienced young people.
The day featured a variety of activities, including face painting, a silent disco, and balloon modelling, offering entertainment and engagement for attendees.
Also showcased were local organisations such as Route1 Advocacy and the RSPCA, with attendees enjoying ice cream and other treats.
Nominations for awards were put forward by social workers, foster carers, leaving care workers, schools, and other Children’s Services professionals, setting a new record for the number received.
A panel reviewed the nominations anonymously, selecting winners in diverse categories.
Teachers, workers, and carers were also honoured, with young people given a chance to nominate adults who had supported them.
The event was hosted by Somerset’s in Care Council (SiCC) and Somerset’s Leaving Care Council (SLCC), alongside Somerset Council’s Engagement and Participation Team.
Leah, a member of SiCC and SLCC, shared her thoughts on the day saying: “We really care about each other, and today is about all of us. We celebrate everyone’s achievements and progress, and I hope everyone attending goes away feeling happy and proud.”
Paul Mitchell from Somerset Council praised the voluntary efforts of SiCC and SLCC, remarking on their dedication: “SiCC and SLCC do this voluntarily, and they work really hard to deliver a special day for our young people. They continue to inspire us, as do all of the remarkable children and young people recognised today.”
Councillor Heather Shearer said: “This event is one of the highlights of the year. It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements, talents, and resilience of Somerset’s children looked after and care experienced young people."
Foster carers play a crucial role in the welfare of young people, and Somerset continues to seek more carers to help support over 650 children in care.
