He was taken to hospital for treatment and has been discharged to recover at home.
The police have maintained contact with him and offered support services.
Enquiries into the incident include the review of CCTV footage, witness statements, and forensic investigations.
The image of a man, believed to have important information, has been released to help further the investigation.
The man is described as white, around 30 years old, approximately 6ft tall, of slim build, with short dark hair, and was wearing an Under Armour T-shirt and black shorts.
DC Rachel Biggs from CID said, “This was an awful assault in which the victim has no recollection. There is no wider risk to the public as we believe the parties involved were known to each other. Information people may have, irrespective of how trivial it seems, could be vital to our enquiries.”
