Trials at Crewkerne and Wincanton hospitals show promising results
A new initiative aimed at helping Somerset hospital patients maintain their independence during their hospital stay is set to be expanded following successful early trials at Crewkerne and Wincanton Community hospitals.
Led by hospital matron Tania Collin and inspired by the national #EndPJParalysis campaign, the project encourages patients who are clinically able to get out of bed and use the toilet rather than relying on bedpans or bottles.
The initiative addresses deconditioning issues; the physical and mental decline that occurs when patients remain inactive for extended periods during hospital stays.
Starting at Wincanton Hospital in June, the trial showed a significant reduction in bedpan and bottle use, along with positive feedback from patients and hospital staff.
Tania Collin said: "This quality improvement project is trying to achieve a reduction in deconditioning, which has such a devastating impact on elderly patients in particular and can affect their recovery, discharge and future care needs."
Collin emphasised the importance of maintaining dignity and some normality for patients, advocating for a task-focused approach that prioritises toileting out of bed to prevent deconditioning and boost patient independence.
The project involved nursing, therapy, and advanced clinical practitioner teams working collaboratively to assess patients who could be supported to stand, transfer, or walk to the toilet safely as part of their rehabilitation.
Audit data during the trial reflected an 88% reduction in bedpan use and an 86% reduction in bottle use compared to baseline levels.
The initiative is set to extend to Frome and West Mendip community hospitals and ultimately aims to be introduced within acute hospital settings.
Collin presented the project's success at the 2026 #EndPJParalysis Global Summit, highlighting the goal of valuing patients' time and helping them maintain independence through dignity and respect.
"Patient feedback has been overwhelmingly positive," Collin noted, stressing that the initiative provides satisfaction for staff who witness the progress and independence it restores to patients.
