Frome and East Somerset's Anna Sabine MP said she was "keen to look at" graduated driving licenses in an interview with Greatest Hits Radio.

Sabine plans to join MPs in Westminster for a debate on road safety for young drivers (Tuesday 28th January).

The debate comes as campaigners and families of young people who have died in road traffic collisions, are calling for the government to look at implementing restrictions on new drivers.

Graduated Driving Licenses, which are backed by the RAC and the AA, would put a set of restrictions on people who had only just passed their test.

This could include minimum learning periods, curfews, and limits on the number of passengers in the car.

"I'm really keen to look at and talk about graduated driving licenses," said Anna Sabine.

"I'm not saying accidents are all the fault of young people, but how do we reduce the number of young people racing around on A roads?

"As a parent of teenagers and as someone who can remember being a teenage driver, things like not having too many passengers in the car when you're a new driver, feels sensible to me.

"I can remember being in friends' cars listening to music too loudly and chatting to each other. There are aspects like that I would be keen to look at.

"It's not Lib Dem policy at the moment but I'm talking to my colleagues about whether it should be," she added.

The Westminster debate will be led by Labour's Julia Buckley MP.
