Decision on 1,700 new homes in Frome expected by Easter
Final decision will determine future of Selwood Garden Community development
Last updated 17th Feb 2026
The fate of a significant housing development in Frome, comprising 1,700 new homes, will be determined by early April 2026.
The Selwood Garden Community (SGC) project aims to create homes on agricultural land between the B3090 Marston Lane and the A361, along with commercial spaces, care homes, a primary school, and public open spaces.
A public inquiry was conducted in Shepton Mallet in August 2025, where planning inspector Stephen Normington heard from various witnesses and conducted a site visit.
Eight months after the inquiry, the Planning Inspectorate confirmed that Normington's report has been submitted to housing secretary Steve Reed MP, with a final decision expected by 8th April 2026.
During the inquiry, Paul Tucker KC, representing the SGC consortium of landowners, highlighted benefits such as affordable housing, new employment sites, public spaces, and highway improvements.
Somerset Council maintained a neutral stance, with barrister Killian Garvey explaining that their decision-making powers were bypassed due to the government's intervention.
The Planning Inspectorate spokesperson confirmed, "A decision will be issued on or before April 8, 2026."
