Ferne Animal Sanctuary to host family-friendly Wildlife Day in Somerset
A Somerset animal sanctuary is inviting visitors to celebrate the county's wildlife with a special day of nature-themed activities during the spring half-term holiday.
Ferne Animal Sanctuary, near Chard, will hold its Wildlife Day event on Monday, May 25, offering families the chance to learn more about local wildlife while exploring the charity's 72-acre site.
The event will feature a range of activities aimed at all ages, including expert talks, pond dipping sessions, photography workshops and wildlife-inspired arts and crafts.
One of the highlights of the day will be talks from the chairman of the Somerset Moth Group, who will share insights into Britain's moth species and offer visitors the opportunity to get a closer look at some of the insects while learning about their habitats and behaviour.
Families will also be able to take part in pond dipping activities, giving children and adults the chance to discover aquatic creatures living within the sanctuary's freshwater pond.
For those interested in photography, local garden photographer Andrea Duncan will lead a practical smartphone photography workshop focusing on capturing outdoor scenes and wildlife. The session will include advice on composition, technique and image editing.
Amy Rendell, Corporate and Events Officer at Ferne Animal Sanctuary, said spring is one of the best times to visit the site, with wildlife flourishing and many of the sanctuary's animal residents spending more time outdoors.
Visitors attending the event will have access to the sanctuary throughout the day, allowing them to explore the grounds, meet the animals and enjoy the surrounding countryside at their own pace.
The sanctuary's on-site café, Perdidas, will also be open during the event.
Advance tickets for Wildlife Day are available at a reduced rate of £5 for adults and £3 for children, while standard admission prices will apply for tickets purchased on the day.
The smartphone photography workshop will run between 10.30am and 12.30pm. Places are limited and must be booked separately.
Ferne Animal Sanctuary has been caring for and rehabilitating animals for more than 85 years. The independent charity is home to more than 250 animals and is located within the Blackdown Hills near Chard.
