Four charged with multiple offences in Weston-super-Mare rape investigation

The suspects are set to appear in Taunton Magistrates’ Court

Four individuals have been charged in connection with a serious rape investigation following an incident reported in Weston-super-Mare on 21st June.

Detectives from Operation Bluestone, a specialist team handling serious sexual offences, managed the arrests upon receiving information about a woman being threatened and raped at a local property.

Those charged include Tommy Campbell, a 19-year-old from Weston-super-Mare. Campbell faces six counts of rape, combined with charges of sexual assault, false imprisonment, and causing actual bodily harm.

Rio Welling, an 18-year-old also from Weston-super-Mare, has been charged with two counts of rape and false imprisonment.

Additionally, two 17-year-old boys, whose identities remain undisclosed due to their age, face respective charges. One has been charged with three counts of rape, false imprisonment, and causing actual bodily harm, and the other with one count of rape and causing actual bodily harm.

All suspects are scheduled to appear at Taunton Magistrates’ Court later today, 11th July.

Detective Inspector Natalie Thatcher elaborated on the investigation's progress, explaining that the Crown Prosecution Service's authorisation of charges signifies a pivotal development.

“Our investigation into this incredibly serious incident has been taking place over the past few weeks and the charges authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service are a significant milestone,” Thatcher said.

The victim is being continuously updated and supported by specially trained officers.

Thatcher acknowledged local concerns stemming from the coordinated arrests across Weston and Worle, assuring transparency around the necessity of the actions taken.

“We would like to thank people for their patience while those enquiries were carried out,” Thatcher added.
