Christopher Brandes, a 52-year-old veteran from Bridgwater, has transformed his life from homelessness to advocating for fellow veterans. Once a soldier in the Royal Logistics Corps, Chris found himself homeless due to a difficult relationship in 2023.

Chris turned to the Royal British Legion hub, which directed him to Arc, resulting in temporary accommodation at Victory House in Taunton. This venue provides shelter for up to eight homeless veterans and was crucial for Chris's recovery.

During his stay at Victory House, he accessed therapy and managed his mental health conditions, including PTSD and ADHD, through Help for Heroes' Hidden Wounds service. Volunteering at St Margaret's Hospice shop in Taunton gave him purpose. Chris stated, "Getting out of the house kept me going, and I'd work seven days a week."

Fueled by newfound confidence, Chris completed 10 YMCA courses to become a tenant, leading to his own flat in Chard by June 2024. He immediately began a Facebook support network for veterans, which evolved into an armed forces breakfast club in Chard.

Two years on, Chris continues striving to assist veterans nationally. He founded UKVeteran75/Support and UKVeteran75/Community to provide housing advice, events information, and a social hub for veterans and their families. He noted, "Doing what I have done has given me a purpose."

Chris collaborates with other veterans, including a partnership with Black Ops Clothing to sell custom gear supporting his initiative. He is now seeking volunteers as he prepares a more tech-oriented expansion.

"The hardest thing is asking for help," Chris shared, emphasizing determination as key to overcoming adversity. He has applied for his community to join the Armed Forces Covenant, reflecting his commitment to veterans' welfare.

The Chard Veterans Breakfast Club convenes monthly, offering camaraderie and support in a welcoming environment. Chris's movement highlights the power of perseverance and community in uplifting lives.
