Firefighters tackling large blaze at derelict building in Frome
Eight fire engines are at the scene, with cordons in place because of the building’s unstable structure
Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a derelict three-storey building in Frome.
Crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service were called to the scene on Kingsway just before 3pm this afternoon (1 July).
The fire service say cordons have been put in place due to the "structural instability" of the building and people are being urged to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke.
A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement: "We currently have eight pumping appliances plus special appliances at a three-storey derelict building fire on Kingsway, Frome.
"The building is fully involved in fire and crews are using three main jets to tackle the fire.
"Cordons have been put in place due to the structural instability of the building.
"Please keep your windows and doors closed if you live nearby due to the smoke.
"Update 16.55 - Two water carriers and two aerial ladder platforms have been mobilised to the scene.
"Appliances and officers are attending from our neighbouring fire and rescue services in Avon and Dorset and Wiltshire."
