Fire crews have been tackling a gritter lorry fire on the A361 near Glastonbury.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines and a water carrier were sent to Edgarley Road near to a building owned by Millfield School at around 8:15am this morning (24 June).
The fire service has confirmed that the driver of the council gritting lorry was able to safely get out of the vehicle
A spokesperson for Somerset Council said in a statement: "The gritter was on a routine maintenance run, taken out in the early morning to avoid the heat of the day.
"We're expecting a busy few days for our gritters with the fleet being used to dust roads at risk of melting in the extreme heat, highlighting that gritters play an important role in road maintenance all year round and not just during times of snow and ice."
A road closure was in place but has since been lifted.
The fire service has also confirmed that the gritting lorry has been 90% damaged by fire.
Drivers are being asked by Somerset Council to avoid the area.
