Ferne Animal Sanctuary seeking support for veterinary costs to save abandoned pets

Call to raise £12,500 for essential care including dental work and neutering

Ferne Animal Sanctuary has launched a campaign to raise £12,500 for veterinary costs that will support the welfare of unwanted and abandoned dogs and cats across Somerset.

The funds aim to cover crucial procedures such as dental work and neutering, particularly for older animals who require more extensive care.

At present, 25% of the cats on the sanctuary's waiting list are over 12 years old, which puts an increased strain on resources.

Nikki Haddock, the welfare manager at Ferne Animal Sanctuary, highlighted the importance of these funds, saying, "Routine veterinary care is essential and comes at a cost.

"Older animals often require more help, and neutering is vital for managing a cat population."

Nikki told Hits Radio that essential care is necessary for these animals, but due to their age, potential adopters are often hesitant because they may come from a background where their previous owners have died, presenting a drastically new environment for them.

She also shared that certain breeds of dogs, like Spaniels, are quickly rehomed, while other breeds remain in the sanctuary’s kennels for months awaiting new homes.

Tragically, the sanctuary is still recovering from a break-in over the summer when essential items were stolen. On the night of 25th July, thieves took a pick-up truck, a quad bike, tools, and wheelbarrows. Nikki shared that the staff were "heartbroken to think anyone would target us like this."

The urgency is compounded by stretched resources, with Nikki stating, "All resources are stretched, whether that's finance, people, time — everything's stretched in every direction.

"What we are really good at doing is making do with what we have, but it's reached a point where we can't make do anymore."

Last year, the costs for dental work and neutering surged to over £25,000, underscoring the critical need for financial help. Despite challenges, Ferne Animal Sanctuary remains committed to providing hope and care for abandoned animals like Bill, whose dental procedure cost over £1,000, and Pearl, who will be neutered once her kittens are weaned.

If the campaign exceeds its target, the extra funds will further alleviate veterinary costs for animals awaiting new homes. Nikki said, "We know it’s not glamorous, but it’s the backbone of what we do and the costs are crippling. Your generosity helps us continue this vital work."

Community members are encouraged to share this cause with their networks, as wider engagement could significantly elevate fundraising efforts.
