Sanctuary appeals for community support as vital equipment stolen in recent theft
Ferne Animal Sanctuary, a cherished haven for animals and a safe space for staff and volunteers, experienced a distressing break-in that has affected both its operations and the emotional well-being of its team.
According to Emma Purnell, CEO of Ferne Animal Sanctuary, the sanctuary was targeted in a theft that resulted in core estates equipment, including a Toyota Hilux pickup and a quad bike, being stolen.
The sanctuary was closed on July 26th as investigations took place.
Emma Purnell shared that while the people and animals at the sanctuary are safe and unharmed, some animals appear unsettled following the incident.
One resident cat, who usually enjoys roaming independently, has been seeking reassurance and attention, reflecting the impact on the sanctuary's usual tranquil atmosphere.
Emma explained that the break-in has also generated financial concerns.
The missing equipment is essential for sanctuary operations, particularly for transporting items and setting up events.
The sanctuary's upcoming annual dog show, planned for the 5th of September, is now facing logistical challenges due to the loss of transport equipment.
Emma emphasised the urgent need for community support: "We've had an outpouring of support from our regular supporters and visitors."
The sanctuary launched a campaign on Just Giving, called Ferne Crisis Support, aiming to raise funds for interim measures to replace stolen equipment and support the animals and staff.
